Bangladesh runs on its rivers, and nowhere is that more visible than at its markets. Long before most cities wake up, boats are already unloading the day's produce onto crowded ghats.
Riverside vegetable markets
Small wooden boats trade produce hull-to-hull, and the market spreads across the riverbank in an unplanned, chaotic geometry that looks intentional from above.
Wholesale cauliflower and cabbage markets
At the larger inland ghats, the scale changes entirely. Trucks and boats arrive overloaded with produce, and workers move it by the basket-load, balanced on their heads, through impossibly tight lanes.
Arrive by 6am if you want the market at its most active - by mid-morning, the best light and the best chaos have usually both passed.
